Microsoft Sticks With Metro for Next-Gen Windows

Windows 8 is barely out the gate, and already details on Microsoft's next OS are surfacing. While it's a long road to launch, one thing looks certain: Metro is here to stay.

Love it or loathe it, Microsoft's minimalist and blocky Metro user interface will provide Windows its signature look for the foreseeable future, according to reports making the rounds.

New details have emerged on an upcoming version of Microsoft's operating system code-named Windows Blue. An enthusiast at the Taiwanese online forum?PCBeta?claims that Windows Blue will carry on with its predecessor's UI and borrow some tricks from Windows Phone 8.

Cain Velasquez reclaims UFC heavyweight title

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Cain Velasquez waited 13 miserable months for the chance to put the UFC heavyweight belt back around his waist.

When he finally got Junior Dos Santos back in the cage, Cain didn't waste another minute.

Velasquez reclaimed the UFC heavyweight title Saturday night, thoroughly battering Dos Santos on the way to a lopsided unanimous decision in UFC 155.

Velasquez (11-1) took early control of the rematch of his only career loss, flooring the Brazilian champion with a big right hand midway through the first round. Velasquez spent most of the match stalking and pounding on Dos Santos (15-2), who never fully recovered from the first-round shot that left him swollen and woozy.

"I was so tired, but I had to endure," Velasquez said. "My coaches and everybody helped me so much. He's tough, too. ... It feels so good to get this. This is my wife's Christmas present. I promised her I would do this."

Velasquez won every round on every judge's scorecard in the UFC's traditional year-end event in its hometown. The three judges scored the bout for Velasquez 50-45, 50-44 and 50-43. The Associated Press also favored Velasquez 50-44, giving a 10-8 advantage to Velasquez in the first round.

Dos Santos took the UFC belt away from Velasquez in November 2011 in just 64 seconds, earning a first-round stoppage victory with one vicious overhand right in Anaheim, Calif. Velasquez refused to blame a knee injury for his only defeat ? but in the rematch, he demonstrated exactly what he can do at full strength.

"I knew that Junior was a tough striker and he was able to end our last fight that way, so I was prepared for him this time," Velasquez said. "I was able to effectively use my striking and my grappling to control him throughout the fight and get the title back."

Jim Miller won a narrow unanimous decision over Joe Lauzon in a sensationally bloody fight on the undercard, and rising middleweight Costa Philippou stopped Tim Boetsch in the third rounds. Yushin Okami grappled his way past Alan Belcher and Derek Brunson easily beat veteran Chris Leben.

But 12,423 fans bought a record $3.2 million in tickets at the MGM Grand Garden to see the second meeting in what seems certain to be a memorable heavyweight trilogy ? although UFC President Dana White said Velasquez is likely to fight again, probably against Alistair Overeem, while Dos Santos heals.

"I don't know if you saw (Dos Santos) after the fight, but he looked terrible," White said. "It's going to be a while until he starts training again."

Dos Santos' loss was his first in the UFC in 10 fights with mixed martial arts' dominant promotion, and his first defeat anywhere since November 2007. Dos Santos expected the rematch to last longer, but also predicted a second knockout.

Instead, Dos Santos barely avoided getting stopped in the first round, and he headed straight to a hospital after the bout with what White thought was a broken jaw.

"His game was very effective, and tonight he was better than me," Dos Santos said. "It's not usual for me to take a punch, but he walks forward all the time. His takedowns, his grappler game is very effective, so congratulations for him."

Velasquez immediately showed the rematch would bear little resemblance to the first fight, pursuing Dos Santos from the opening bell and quickly backing up the champion. Velasquez then floored Dos Santos with that huge right to the head midway through the round, and Dos Santos had to cover up in the corner while barely surviving an onslaught of strikes and ground-and-pound.

After brusquely swatting aside his stool and choosing to stand in his corner between rounds, Velasquez went to work on the ground in the second, and the former Arizona State wrestler repeatedly got the boxing specialist into bad positions.

Dos Santos struggled to regain his rhythm, and Velasquez managed another takedown early in the third round before repeatedly tagging the champion with shots that left his face discolored and puffy.

At the final bell, Velasquez collapsed on his back at the center of the cage, pointing skyward with both hands. Although Overeem is tops among several heavyweights who would like a title shot, a third bout between Velasquez and Dos Santos can't be too far away.

"Cain Velasquez, like you said (last year), I'm going to come back and I'm going to take my belt again," Dos Santos said.

Dos Santos' win over Velasquez last year in the UFC's first fight on American network television catapulted the hard-punching Brazilian heavyweight into an international spotlight. Both fighters injured their knees in the month leading up to their first fight, but stayed in the bout because of its importance.

Dos Santos defended his title against Frank Mir earlier this year and got a lucrative sponsorship deal with Nike while emerging as one of the promotion's most likable stars.

Miller and Lauzon also turned in one of the UFC's best fights of 2012 in its final show, starting when Miller opened a gaping gash over Lauzon's right eye early in the first round. Blood gushed out of Lauzon's face and onto the canvas, yet he blinked it away and survived the round to a standing ovation.

Lauzon bled substantially for the final two rounds, yet traded big shots with Miller and even took down his fellow veteran, although submission holds were nearly impossible due to the blood slickening both fighters' bodies. Miller narrowly avoided two submission attempts by Lauzon in the final seconds before celebrating his second win in four fights.

"Joe Lauzon is a tough kid," Miller said. "I knew I was going to have to bring my best effort to put him away and I was never able to. That's how good he is on the ground. And even in the last minute, look what he was trying to do to win the fight."

After two dull main-card bouts resulted in wins for Okami and Brunson, Philippou (12-2) and Boetsch entertained the crowd ? but Boetsch (16-5) left his first loss in two years with big cuts on his forehead and nose along with an apparently injured hand. Philippou was impressive in his fifth straight victory, winning as a fairly late replacement for Chris Weidman, his training partner.

In the early fights, veteran Jamie Varner (21-7-1) continued his comeback with a split-decision victory over Melvin Guillard (47-13-3), and heavyweight Todd Duffee (9-2) returned to the UFC after an acrimonious 2?-year absence with a nasty first-round knockout victory over Phil De Fries.

Jobs clearly on line as Eagles play finale against Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? The suffering ends today for the Eagles.

Win, lose or draw, the latter a vexing footnote of the Andy Reid era, the worst Eagles season in at least 14 years will be over after they oppose the New York Giants (1 p.m., Fox 29, WIP 94.1-FM) at the Meadowlands.

The following day an announcement is anticipated on the future of Reid, who has one year and more than $6 million remaining to be paid on his contract as head coach/executive vice president of football operations.

On various levels, a source explained, the Eagles have cut ties with employees and probed others about their loyalty to the culture he established since coming on board as head coach in 1999.

In the organization it?s largely assumed ? if unofficial ? that the Eagles intend to go in another direction.

Owner Jeffrey Lurie said before the season that he wanted substantial improvement over the disappointing 8-8 finish of 2011. He?s since remained in the background.

Reid says he hasn?t discussed those issues with Lurie. The coach has been unwilling to address the rumors.

?I haven?t gone there,? Reid said. ?I?m not going to go there. I?m going to get through this game, make sure my team is ready to play.?

The Eagles (4-11) are seven-point underdogs versus the defending Super Bowl champion Giants (8-7), who to reach the playoffs need to beat the Eagles and cross their fingers that Washington defeats Dallas, Green Bay tops Minnesota and Detroit beats Chicago. There?s a 9 percent probability all of that falls into place for the Giants, who have won just two of their last seven games.

?Obviously guys aren?t excited and aren?t thrilled about our position right now and the way we?ve been playing these last couple of weeks,? wide receiver Victor Cruz said. ?We?re definitely not excited about it. So obviously guys are a little bit down on themselves and down on this year?s opportunities, and lack of opportunities. So we?re approaching this last game as must-win for us.? Continued...

Quarterback Michael Vick makes what could be his last start for the Eagles. While Vick downplayed the importance of the game, he needs to prove he?s fully functional after being sidelined five weeks by a concussion.

?He doesn?t know his future here,? teammate Jamar Chaney said. ?So I?m pretty sure he?s going to go out there and have the best game of his career. If his career is here, it will set the stage for next year. If it?s somewhere else, he can put some tape out there and let people know that he?s a guy who?s still an efficient starter in this league.?

The Eagles took their time bringing back Vick partly because of the seriousness of his injury and because they wanted to assess rookie quarterback Nick Foles.

Had Foles not broken a bone in his throwing hand, Vick wouldn?t be making more than a ceremonial appearance today. It?s hard to imagine Vick being part of the next regime with his base salary of $15.5 million. That?s a starter?s pay.

That said, in his last road game against the Giants, Vick sparked the Birds to a 38-31 victory so dramatic it became Miracle of the Meadowlands II. DeSean Jackson?s 65-yard punt return as time expired completed a four-touchdown explosion in the final 7:29. That was the final month of the 2010 season. Jackson is sidelined by injury, as are Eagles starters Jason Peters, Mike Patterson, Todd Herremans and Jason Kelce. All but Kelce played in that game.

?Last time I played in New York we had a lot to play for,? Vick said. ?We?ve still got a lot to play for. But it was a great game. It will be exciting. It?s the Big Apple. You can?t ask for too much more.?

The same can be said of Reid, who after reaching the playoffs in five of his first six seasons, has missed them in four of the past eight seasons, including two straight years.

?When you don?t win,? Vick said, ?you know what comes along with it.?

Or in the case of coaches and players, who goes along with it.

Self Improvement Techniques: A Guide To A Better Life - Health Care

Most people wish they had a slightly different life. For some, the shows itself in their personal life whereas with others, they prefer to concentrate on improving their professional careers. Anyone intrigued by the idea of self improvement will find the insights of this article quite useful.

Come up with a little pep talk for yourself. Write a list of each of your good points and attributes on an index card. Take it with you everywhere you go, and go over each quality when you feel the need. Another great idea is to recite the list while filming yourself, so that you can view the footage regularly. Is there a benefit?

Speaking to a therapist or religious official can really help you out. Not only have they been trained to deal in personal growth, their experience in these issues is what makes them a good choice to speak with. They?ll eagerly listen, analyze what?s going on and help you find enlightenment. Talking these issues through with someone who is a professional will help you be healthier and happier in the long term.

Understand that there is a divide between where you are and where you wish to go. This is the best way to be able to set a course of direction to get there. If you do not know this, you are not ready to begin personal development.

Read literature that is focused on self improvement. A good book can provide you with the information that you need to get started on your journey toward a new you. Pick out a book that has gotten good reviews because there are some books about self improvement that are not written very well.

When trying to achieve personal development, failures can dampen and hurt an individual?s ego and self esteem. Approach your failures as opportunities to learn. Failure helps you figure out what you are good at and what needs improvement. When you look at it that way, failure should inspire pride in your ability to discover a new piece in your puzzle.

To keep from saying something you may regret later, count from one to ten before speaking. This gives you time to get your emotions under control. Take a cleansing breath and focus on something positive. Picture yourself remaining calm and saying only what you will not regret.

If you hope to advance your state of knowledge regarding self improvement, it can help to show a little humility. As you acknowledge that you are small and insignificant in this universe, the more that you realize your lack of knowledge. Once you absorb this fact, you will have a desire for further knowledge and understanding.

Make the important aspects of your life the focus of how you live. You will have much more inner peace if you just choose to focus on things that matter to you.

For many, there is a vague feeling of discontentment and an urge to facilitate change, but they lack the knowledge needed to begin. While a great result is only going to be achieved by you putting in the effort, here are some handy hints to get you on the road to success. Stay motivated by keeping these tips in mind at all times.

Film explores African-Americans' unhealthy "soul food" habit

(Reuters) - After interviewing food historians, scholars, cooks, doctors, activists and consumers for his new film "Soul Food Junkies," filmmaker Byron Hurt concluded that an addiction to soul food is killing African-Americans at an alarming rate.

The movie, which will premiere on January 14 on U.S. public broadcasting television, examines how black cultural identity is linked to high-calorie, high-fat food such as fried chicken and barbecued ribs and how eating habits may be changing.

In the deeply personal film, Hurt details his father's fight and eventual death from pancreatic cancer. A high-fat diet is a risk factor for the illness, according to researchers at Duke University in North Carolina.

"I never questioned what we ate or how much," 42-year-old New Jersey-based Hurt says in the film that travels from New Jersey and New York to Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Chicago.

"My father went from being young and fit to twice his size."

Hurt, who also made "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes," decided to examine the link between calorie-loaded soul food and illnesses among blacks after his father was diagnosed in 2006.

He delves into his family history, as well as slavery, the African diaspora and the black power movement in the film and provides photographs, drawings, historic film footage and maps.

In Jackson, Mississippi, Hurt joined football fans for ribs and corn cooked with pigs' feet and turkey necks. He also visited Peaches Restaurant, founded in 1961, where freedom riders and civil rights activists including Martin Luther King Jr. ate.

Hurt, whose family came from Milledgeville, Georgia, grew up on a diet of fried chicken, pork chops, macaroni and cheese, potatoes and gravy, barbecued ribs, sweet potato pie, collard greens, ham hocks and black-eyed peas.

"The history of Southern food is complex," he said. "In many ways, the term soul food is a reduction of our culinary foodways."

The origins of the diet lie in the history of American slavery, according to food historian Jessica B. Harris, who appears in the film. Slaves ate a high-fat, high-calorie diet that would allow them to burn 3,000 calories a day working, she explained.

Southern food began to be called soul food during the civil rights and black power movements of the 1960s, according to Hurt.

"There's an emotional connection and cultural pride in what they see as the food their population survived on in difficult times," he said.

But Hurt said African-Americans are being devastated by nutrition-related diseases.

Black adults have the highest rates of obesity and a higher prevalence of diabetes than whites, and are twice as likely to die of stroke before age 75 than other population groups, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Besides tradition and habit, poverty and neighborhoods without good supermarkets also contribute to an unhealthy diet, Hurt said.

"Low-income communities of color lack access to vegetables and have an overabundance of fast food and highly processed foods that are high in calories and fats. I always know when I'm in a community of color because I see ... very, very few supermarkets and health food stores," he added.

In her book, "High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America," Harris said the prevalence of over processed foods, low-quality meats, and second- or third-rate produce in minority neighborhoods amounts to "culinary apartheid."

In the film, Marc Lamont Hill, an associate professor of English education at Columbia University in New York, described minority health problems related to poor diet as "21st-century genocide."

Hurt says the government can help by increasing urban access to quality food and requiring calorie counts to be displayed on restaurant menus.

Nonprofit organizations such as Growing Power Inc., which runs urban farms in Chicago and Milwaukee, provide fresh vegetables to minority neighborhoods.

Brian Ellis, 21, said all he ate was fast food when he started working at one of Growing Power's urban farms in Chicago when he was 14.

"Then I started eating food I'd never seen before like Swiss chard," said Ellis, who appears in the film. "I never knew what beets were. I'd never seen sprouts before. I'm not that big of a beet fan, but I love sprouts. I could eat sprouts all day."

Because the bass player is too slow, for the winger it's too little money and the drummer didn't get the assignment. Blog readers often have the opportunity to comment on the jokes they find most funny and original.

Things are looking a lot more inspiring in this second part of the year. In this new season of fall and winter movies there should be something for everyone. There are action movies, family movies, Oscar worthy dramas, and some spicy comedies coming up in the next third of the year.

But it does. bancuri can help you to heal from depression and stress. It can even do more: if you make a habit of looking for laughter, it can even promote your long-term good health. It might even help you to find new kindred spirits with whom you can share your sense of humor. Anyone who can help you to again experience the whimsy, amusing ironies, joyfulness and chortles or even guffaws that spring out of living a positive life is worth keeping around.

Johnny Depp is the star of this movie. Intrigue, danger, and romance will become his nemesis in The Tourist, after he has a playful romance with a stranger. Frank (Depp), takes a trip to Europe to forget a bad love affair and meets Elise, with whom he involves himself in an encounter that has been engineered by Elise. A terrible game of cat and mouse ensues through Paris and Vienna as their romance evolves.

The pianists we see play appear to be the most formal and respectable stars on the stage. They hold the power and the breath of the audiences. They could look intimidating in their formal suits not to mention the authority and the air of arrogance they exude while on stage. They can be captivating.

There is an exercise I call the Pink Tu Tu tactic. Learn to use it on someone you fear, are angry at, or someone you feel has power over you. Simply visualize that person dancing in a bright neon pink Tu Tu. Guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and completely strip them of any power you thought they had over you.

There are benefits beyond the fun to this kind of silliness. Have you noticed that "going green" and saving money often involve the same behaviors? "Use it up. Wear it out. Recycle it." is good for both the environment and the pocketbook. And if you can find fun ways to do it, it's also good for your sense of well-being.

With the world going at a really crazy pace, people forget to stop and smile a bit. Most of these mistakes can be frustrating and depressing.

How do You Know if Your Customer Service Sucks?

By Paul Barrs.

Let me ask you a question? a simple question ?

Have you ever experienced a moment of bad customer service? Do you remember it?

I know I have, and I know I do. Let me explain?

Start Customer Service Nightmare 101 ?

It was about 3 in the afternoon, yesterday. Quite hot and I was second in line. OK, no problems so far ? if I were 15th in line I might not have been too happy. However, I wasn?t at the checkout where most of us associate ?lines in waiting?, but rather I was at my local bike store picking up a front wheel for my push-bike that had been in for repair.

Standing in line before me was a pleasantly attractive 40 something lady who, without any doubt, *knew* how to dress to impress. Outside the front of the shop was a late model Mercedes sporting a single name registration plate ? a lady?s name. As we waited, I asked if it was hers to which she replied a confirmation.

?Very Nice?, I said, drawing a smile from her. Beyond the service counter that we were waiting at I saw a young man looking slightly bewildered coming back up to the counter. I turned to my new friend and asked, ?What have you lost??

?My bike?, she said. ?They?ve found one, but I put two in.?

I was almost sure that I hadn?t heard correctly, after all, she had the service ticket stub in hand.

Let?s talk a moment about bad customer service?.

Then the service assistant looked towards her, ?What colour was your bike again??

After a few more moments of scattered looking around another man came up, this time he was, looked wiser, and I thought perhaps was the service manager. He asked, ?What seems to be the problem?? Again the beautifully calm and collected Mercedes lady before me recited her plight.

At this point I was stunned. This ?manager? replied with some quip like, ?Well, not everything works out? does it.? Plainly he didn?t care, or at least he didn?t ?show? any care. I couldn?t believe she was so calm.

An opportunity for Customer Service 101.

Meanwhile, a different staff member approached me. I told him that I was there to pick up my front wheel, I handed him my service ticket and watched as he walked once around the workshop and then came back to the counter empty handed.

?What?s it look like?? He asked.

?? Huh?

?Ummmm.? I paused. How do you answer such a question? ?It?s a wheel. It?s round. It?s got a tyre on it.?

?Yeah, but what?s it look like?? He asked me this like I was dyslexic.

Another opportunity for good customer service goes out the window?.

I pointed towards one of the hundred or more bikes in the shop. ?Like that one, except it?s just the wheel.?

He looked towards the bike and then back to me. I guess I had two heads. ?Yeah, but what colour is it??

I scanned the workshop ? all 100 plus wheels (which were all attached to bikes) were silver stainless steel. I couldn?t see any difference in colours at all, and so I told him.

He went off in search again and after a moment found it ? it was directly behind the counter all the time.

Then yet another fellow came up and took me to the cashier for payment. My Mercedes friend was still waiting patiently wondering what had happened to her lost bike.

Sigh. It leaves me wondering. I?m tempted in jest to simply say W.T. ? ? Such appalling service really has no place in today?s business world. And unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. I can easily recall two more similar stories of such gross incompetency from previous months. And the thing is, it?s not that hard to do. All it takes is a good attitude and good training.

Though when it comes to online business and customer service, in particular the micro business sector, the troubles are magnified ten-fold! Too many people think that because they can hide behind a glazed computer screen that they can treat their customers almost with contempt. Oh yes, don?t get me wrong, if it?s a paying customer, they?ll be treated like gold!

But if that customer has a ?problem? that goes beyond the ?paid value? of whatever purchase they had made, God help them, because the website owner sure won?t. There?s even a new trend these days among ?up-and-coming? net business people to write into their sales copy that ?

?Refunds will not be accepted within the first 3 days because ??

Huh? OK, I get the argument that they are worried about a new trend of buyers that are called ?serial refunders?. I get that. Fine. So ban them and get on with business, or change the registration process for your product.

That?s not customer service, that?s shyster!

Meanwhile, get back on with providing service, and not just good service; but awesome brilliant exceptional service! Just because the 90?s buzz-words of ?everyone?s doing? it have gone, doesn?t mean that such is still true.

I?m sure my Mercedes lady is still waiting for someone to find her lost bike? as well as some customer service!

Developing Public Speaking Courage and Self-Confidence | Dale ...

Since 1912, more than five hundred thousand men and women have been members of Dale Carnegie?s public speaking course. Many of them have written statements telling why they enrolled for this training and what they hoped to obtain from it.

While the phraseology varied, the central desire in these letters?the basic ?want? from the vast majority?remained surprisingly the same:

?When I am called upon to stand up and speak, I become so self-conscious, so frightened, that I can?t think clearly, can?t concentrate, can?t remember what I had intended to say. I want to gain self-confidence, poise, and the ability to think on my feet. I want to get my thoughts together in logical order and I want to be able to say my say clearly and convincingly before a business or club group or audience.?

And it is that type of confidence and self-assured attitude that Dale Carnegie Training programs deliver.

Dale Carnegie lists four essential things we all need to get the most out of our efforts to become good public speakers:

Start with a Strong and Persistent Desire ? Go after your subject with persistence, and with the energy of a bulldog after a cat. Arouse your enthusiasm and think of what additional self-confidence and the ability to talk more convincingly in public will mean to you socially and in terms of dollars and cents.

Know Thoroughly What You Are Going to Talk About ? Unless a person has thought out and planned his talk and knows what he is going to say, he can?t feel very comfortable when he faces his auditors. He is like the blind leading the blind. Don?t speak until you are sure you have something to say, and know just what it is; then say it, and sit down.

Act Confident ? To develop courage when you are facing an audience, act as if you already had it. Step out briskly and take a deep breath. Don?t fidget and don?t hide behind furniture. Draw yourself up to your full height, look your audience straight in the eyes, and begin to talk as confidently as if every one of them owed you money.

Practice, Practice, Practice! ? The first way, the last way, and the never-failing way to develop self-confidence in speaking is?to speak. Choose a subject on which you have some knowledge, and construct a three-minute talk. Practice the talk by yourself a number of times. Then give it, if possible, to the group for whom it is intended, or before a group of friends, putting into the effort all your force and power.

WASHINGTON, MO (KTVI)? A school lockdown has been lifted in Washington, Missouri.

The Washington School District placed all of its schools and facilities on lockdown after police lost track of a suspect in the area of one of its schools.? Police were seeking a ?person of interest?, according to Superintendent Lori VanLeer.? The suspect may have been armed.?

After the suspect was pulled over by police, he ran away.? Because of the imminent threat to any facility, Dr. VanLeer put all school children inside while police did their work.? Dr. VanLeer said there was not a threat directly towards a school building, and her move was precautionary.

Authorities have confirmed the suspect has been captured.

At least one eyewitness told FOX 2 News they saw armed law enforcement officials conducting a search in the area near one of the schools.?

We?ll have more information on this story as it becomes available.

Instagram angers users with new privacy policy

    1 hr.

The nation's supply of old-timey photos of?whatever it is?you're eating may take a serious hit if Instagram users make good on threats to leave the the photo-sharing service following its new privacy policy.?

"We know these documents are a little dry, but they?re very important," reads Instagram's opening salvo. "Please take a moment to read through them so you keep feeling comfortable sharing your beautiful photos on Instagram."?

    Good luck with that.?

Privacy advocates and users alike are interpreting the dense legalese of the new policy,?which goes into effect on Jan. 16, as permission for Instagram to use all?publicly?shared images like its stockpile of stock photos, farming out your bathroom mirror self portraits, or whatever, to?advertisers?willing to pay. (Pay Facebook via Instagram ? not pay you and/or the photographer.)

"Really,?Instagram? Purchased for $1B in inflated FB stock and you're going to start selling members' pictures? Street Artists best?leave?now," read one tweet of warning.?

    "I came late to?Instagram, but I will?leave?early," noted another.

For what it's worth, Instagram isn't claiming it owns your "Content" (with a capital "C"). It's just apparently?going to sell it like it does. As the new user agreement reads:

Instagram does not claim ownership of any Content that you post on or through the Service. Instead, you hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the Content that you post on or through the Service, except that you can control who can view certain of your Content and activities on the Service as described in the Service's Privacy Policy, available here:http://instagram.com/legal/privacy/.

You have the option of deleting your account by Jan. 16, says the new agreement. After that, it's a done deal, you have no way to opt out. Further, photos you posted prior to Jan. 16 are eligible for licensing by Instagram for?an amount of time not specified in the new privacy policy.?

If you do choose to?stay, you may also be agreeing not to hold Instagram liable if it makes a whoopsie and exposes what you marked as private content, a mishap that's happened over at Facebook over the years. According to the new policy,?"None of your Content will be subject to any obligation of confidence on the part of Instagram, and Instagram will not be liable for any use or disclosure of any Content you provide."

Whether the Internet outrage actually does encourage an exodus from Instagram is doubtful, considering how many users never follow through on their threats to leave its owner, Facebook.?

As one Twitter user puts it, "I wish I had the strength to?leave?Instagram?... but I can't do it. No matter how badly it treats me."

Then again, at least some are seeing the bright side of staying: "I can understand why some people won't leave Instagram. Imagine the thrill of seeing your sandwich on somebody's billboard!"

Helen A.S. Popkin?goes?blah blah blah about Internet privacy, then asks you to follow her?on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook.?Also,?Google+.

Drinking Japanese - Food & Drink - Broadsheet Melbourne

    O

ver the past few years, the popularity of sake and the growth contemporary Japanese cuisine has been on the rise in Australian cities, providing us with a refreshing outlook on an often intriguing, innovative and charming culture.

So it shouldn?t come as a surprise that Japanese spirits such as shochu (a rice-based spirit), umeshu (plum liqueur) and yuzushu (a citrus liqueur) have crept into the bar scene as both experimental and inventive ingredient options.

Andre Bishop, owner, sake expert and resident Japanophile at Melbourne?s Kumo Izakaya, explains that cocktails actually make for a perfect ?gateway drink? for Japanese spirits.

?Cocktails are a great way to introduce Japanese spirits into the usual line-up of cocktail ingredients. Bars around the world are now looking to see what they can do with spirits like umeshu and shochu and how they can use these the same way you would use vodka or tequila,? he says.

However, as a sake purist, Bishop prefers not to use the refined flavour profile of sake (especially high-grade sake) in cocktails.

?Most premium sake is probably not suited for cocktails because it?s such delicate, subtle taste. The subtle notes can get lost pretty easily in a cocktail,? he explains.

?But with cocktails in mind, there are?certain styles of sake that are better suited in drinks, like the more full-bodied, high-alcohol Nama Genshu sake, or the Nigori sake [a cloudy sake with floating rice sediments] that adds a nice acidity and texture to cocktails.?

And in regards to the largely unknown nature of Japanese beverages, Bishop explains that there really is no great mystery. Put simply, it is better to approach mixing the ingredients into a cocktail with a light touch. The Japanese palate is in general subtler, lighter and less boisterous than the usual cocktail ingredients we are familiar with, so all you need to do is treat the process with a bit of care.

?Part of what makes Japanese cocktail ingredients so special is that it brings new flavour profiles and even textures that you don?t get with popular Western ingredients,? Bishop says.

?Some more modern sake companies are now making sweeter, carbonated sakes that are almost like champagne and are great in tall cocktails and spritzers.?

That said, the world of cocktails is all about discovering and experimenting with new flavours, and with modern sushi bars and izakayas now a common fixture in most cities, it only makes sense that Japanese alcohols are now taking their worthy place on the shelf next to other worldly staples like vodka, gin and tequila.

The Respawnables - a free, fun, run and gun

The Respawnables was enjoying a limited release in Canada leading up to its global roll-out this weekend. I?ve been playing for the last week or two, and have really enjoyed the third-person-shooter's cartoony style, straightforward controls, and rich selection of unlockables.

The controls are extremely simple and easy to to use. There?s a standard dual-joystick set-up, where the left-side joystick moves the player and panning anywhere on the right side changes the camera angle. The firing button can be moved while being held down to adjust aim, though there are two alternative controls schemes available in the options, including a Y axis inversion toggle and a sensitivity slider. Aside from that, the only other distractions are the reload and grenade buttons - no jump, no duck, no iron sights. For the third-person shooter style, this is perfectly fine, though there are on occasions where you'll be frustrated by very small ledges that seem like you should be able to hop over.

The single-player game is currently not much more than a three-minute deathmatch where players try to fulfill up to three challenges. There are longer-term achievements to earn as well. Of course, you also earn experience points and cash along the way, which allow you to kit out your character with new pants, tops, hairdos, perks, and weapons. Those first three might sound like complete vanity items, but not so - a little known fact of modern warfare is that a flat-top cut can actually improve your accuracy. There are also consumables, such as explosives and boosts to cash and experience point gain.

My only serious complaint about progression is that many of the unlockables are hidden behind the premium gold currency. It?s not that this isn?t unexpected (especially from a Zynga game), it?s just that the push towards in-app purchases is a little more steep than I would like. Some of the perks are unlocked exclusively through the premium currency, which give those that pay a decided advantage online. Many of the higher-powered pieces of equipment also require premium currency, with no option to buy them with the regularly-earned in-game cash.

It?s generally easy enough to find multiplayer games (despite my poor luck in the video). Even with the fairly simple controls, there?s a significant amount of challenge. Sniper rifles feel a tad on the overpowered side right now, though it?s still early in the game?s launch and I suspect plenty of tweaks will be made in short order. By the same token, I?m sure sooner than later we?ll see more than free-for-all and team battle game modes. One vital feature that The Respawnables will need to stay viable is social tools, even if they?re just Game Center plug-ins. Friending other players and chatting with them privately is hugely important to multiplayer gaming on mobile and elsewhere.

The visuals in The Respawnables are flawless. Players are exaggerated, animated, full of character and color, and despite the violent nature of the game, there?s no gore anywhere. On the audio side, I felt the sound effects were a little muffled and repetitive, but the music is top-notch and gets you right into the action movie feeling.

    The good

    • Simple, streamlined controls
    • Tons of style
    • Plenty of unlockables

    The bad

    • Aggressive push towards in-app purchases
    • Lack of multiplayer game modes and friending options

    The bottom line

The Respawnables is a colorful, accessible, action-packed romp. The simple controls, bright style, and wide array of unlockable items makes for a really enjoyable experience, though the balance feels a little too heavily tilted towards getting people to make in-app purchases. I trust that a wider range of items that you can buy with in-game cash rather than premium gold will make things a little bit easier (even if the cash item equivalents aren?t unlocked until later). I?m looking forward to more multiplayer game modes and social options once The Respawnables hits the U.S., but even until then, I?ve got a really nice laid-back alternative to Modern Combat 4.

Parents, students on edge about returning to school

Lilly Rosell contemplated keeping her 7-year-old daughter at home on the first day of classes since the Connecticut elementary school massacre, but she ultimately decided, like so many other parents, there was only so much she could do to keep her daughter safe.

"I'm panicking here to be honest," Rosell, of Miami, said as she anxiously surveyed her daughter's campus. "It's now about being in the prayer closet a little more often."

Most of the nation fell back into the familiar, if newly raw, routine of dropping off children at school, all too aware that a mass shooting can happen anywhere, at any time.

Schools across the U.S. beefed up patrols and security plans were reviewed as teachers and students returned to class after a gunman stormed into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, killing 26 people and then himself. A handful of schools were locked down throughout the day as extra vigilant administrators and police responded to any report of suspicious activity.

At least three schools were on alert in Ohio after threatening comments were made on Facebook and Twitter. In Ridgefield, Conn., swarms of parents picked up their children and police were at each school after a report of a suspicious person at a nearby train station. In Philadelphia, officers rushed to a high school after security officers mistook a student's umbrella for a gun. And in Tampa, Fla., the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office questioned students after a bullet was found on a school bus.

Some parents kept their kids at home. Camille Lacroix-Moulton said her two children both woke up feeling a bit under the weather, so she decided it was best for them to stay home. Her daughter is in kindergarten; her son is in fifth grade.

"Mainly because of my little one. She just turned six, and I don't want her to hear about it," the Milford, N.H., mother said. "It wasn't really me thinking, 'Today's the day that something bad's gonna happen to her. It was more like, a lot of this stuff is going on today. I'm sure a lot of kids know about it, even at her age. So I was more than happy to wait a day and let it die down."

Chicago resident Melissa Tucker said she only sent her children to school after assurances from administrators that extra safety precautions were made.

"I was actually going to keep them home today," she said.

One school district in western Pennsylvania went so far as to get a court order over the weekend so it could arm officers in each of its schools Monday. The board had recently voted to let officers have guns but decided to expedite the process. The court order affected the Butler Area School District and the South Butler County School District, both about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Schools held a moment of silence and flew flags at half-staff. Meanwhile, teachers and administrators tried to handle the psychological toll of the shooting, many of them opting for routine rather than a discussion about the shooting.

At the Global Concepts Charter School in Lackawanna, N.Y., near Buffalo, Principal David Ehrle fielded calls from parents who told him they had shielded their children from news coverage over the weekend. The parents wanted to know whether the kids would hear about it from their teachers. He told them they would not.

"Certainly, you can't stop kids from talking on the bus or at the lunch table, but as a school we're not, if you will, sponsoring educating about it," he said.

Ehrle said teachers at the kindergarten through eighth-grade school were told to assure kids who asked that the school was safe and send any apprehensive students to a counselor if necessary.

"Often, normalcy is the most comforting thing for the students," he said. "That was the message that we sent out over the weekend to the staff is, that we need to continue on doing what we've always done."

Eight-year-old Ally Tobey said she had a completely normal day of third-grade in Concord, N.H. Asked if any of her friends or teachers mentioned Connecticut, she said simply, "nope."

American history teacher Richard Cantlupe said he would remind his students his No. 1 job was to keep them out of harm's way and that, "Just like the teachers at Newtown, I would do whatever I had to do to keep them safe."

Rosell said she didn't tell her daughter any details about the shooting, but did try to prepare her in case there was ever a dangerous situation in the future. She advised her daughter to dive onto the floor if she ever saw someone with a gun or people screaming.

"You mean like hide under my desk?" she said her daughter asked.

No, Rosell told her, explaining she should pretend to be lifeless on the floor instead and not move until she comes to get her. Her daughter looked at her confused.

"You could tell she was lost," Rosell said.
